Time catches up, GPS clock replaces iconic piece at NDA

The iconic clock at the Manoj Pandey Block, formerly known as Science Block, at the National Defence Academy (NDA) was replaced with a new GPS-based system recently.

The Science Block, overlooking the parade ground, is an imposing edifice located on Trishul Marg within the academy.

In its three storeys, it houses the physics, chemistry and basic engineering departments, classrooms, laboratories and the boxing ring. The building is topped by a silver dome resting on a 110ft high clock-tower, which bears a four-faced clock with a 9-foot diameter dial.

An NDA authority told TOI, "The trouble started with the clock in 2005. A series of efforts were made to fix the problem but, because the spare parts were unavailable and neither were skilled technicians, the clock could not be fully revived."

Eventually, it was decided to replace the clock with a new GPS-based clock. "Each clock dial is connected to a GPS-based master control unit and illuminated with LED lights giving it an ultra-modern and aesthetically pleasing appearance," the authority shared.

Former Air Chief PV Naik, an NDA alumnus, welcomed the move and said, "All lectures and the academy's routine are directly connected to the clock. The siren's clock is followed by every cadet at the academy. Although we have the technology, certain old practices should be followed at the military academy."

National Defence Academy sets up ‘Pakistan info room’

If you know your enemies and yourself, you will not be imperilled in a hundred battles -Sun Tzu, the author of The Art of War Taking a cue from the adage, the National Defence Academy has recently set up a "Pakistan Info Room" for providing information to its cadets regarding the neighbour's army. The main objective behind setting it up is to give out information to cadets about the adversary's history, customs and traditions, doctrine, tactics, rank structure, organization and weapons so that they are fully aware and psychologically conditioned to face the not-so-friendly neighbour.

A National Defence Academy (NDA) authority told TOI, "India has long-standing territorial disputes with Pakistan, which has led to wars and border skirmishes. The Line of Control with Pakistan continues to be active and border disputes are yet to be resolved. The Indian Army has to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our motherland at all costs. To achieve this, knowing your adversary is a must, and what better way than to start at NDA — considered as cradle of military leadership."

A senior officer from NDA told TOI, "This room will be continuously updated with the latest information related to Pakistan — right from the latest photograph to new reports. The room has information about Pakistan's regions and their internal disputes among others."

The famous quote of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto "We will eat grass if we have to but we will make the nuclear bomb" draws one's attention soon after entering the room.

"This move will certainly make their (cadets') basics strong. Initially, the cadets used to get information about Pakistan through various discussions, lectures and from available sources. But now, we continuously update the latest developments related to Pakistan so that the cadets get to know. Even if they come to know about Pakistan's tank potential, war tactics and internal issues, it will not be difficult for them to understand the geopolitics of both the nations before going to the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun," a senior officer from NDA added.

A Brigadier-rank officer said, "It is quite essential to know how Pakistan has changed its conventional war tactics to unconventional. If cadets get to know about it at the academy stage, it will certainly help them understand the intricacies of the Pakistan army's psychology."

Brigadier Hemant Mahajan, who has served extensively in Kashmir, welcomed the NDA's move saying it was a prudent initiative to groom cadets in the right direction. "It is said that knowing the enemy is quite essential to win the war. If we could inculcate this habit right from the academy's period, it will certainly create a positive difference in the near future," Mahajan added.

A China room was set up inside the NDA's Army Training Team three years ago.

NDA constructs 37 km wall to secure campus

The National Defence Academy will soon have a boundary wall around its entire premises to enhance security. There have been instances of poachers trespassing into the academy's campus in the past.

The construction work of the 37 km-long wall is its the final phase of completion. The NDA authorities are of the opinion that this wall will prevent trespassers from entering into the campus, especially those from hilly regions.

Furthermore, authorities feel that this additional security measure will certainly help them to secure the academy's flora and fauna.

"A boundary road of 42 kms along the wall ensures easy access and constant surveillance. This is a significant step, focused at fortifying the academy in keeping with the current security situation and other factors like preservation of flora and fauna. This will also help in increasing the deer population significantly. Besides, the cutting of the lucrative Sandalwood trees will stop as well," said NDA authorities.
